What is Behavior Management?

Behavior management is a service involving training, supervision, or assistance in the appropriate expression of emotions and desires, along with compliance, assertiveness and acquisition of socially-appropriate behaviors, and the reduction of challenging behaviors.

What Does a Behavior Consultant Do?

Key responsibilities of a behavior consultant are as follows:

  • Identify and assess individual’s needs through family and/or staff interviews, completing assessments, and review of documents
  • Develop an individualized Behavior Support Plan summarizing the individual’s  context, his or her goals, and specific recommendations to reach those goals
  • Assist the family and/or staff members with determining the priorities of the challenging behaviors
  • Create a behavioral definition of the challenging behavior(s)
  • Directly observe and gather data on those behavior(s)
  • Check for reliability and social validity of data gathered
  • Develop and write behavioral intervention programs using behavioral principles and procedures
  • Train team members on data gathering and implementation of the intervention programs using hands-on observation and interaction, role-playing, proactive strategies, etc.
  • Monitor the ongoing program implementation and recommend program adaptations accordingly
  • Maintain regular contact and communication with the family and team members
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the agency and the State of Indiana, and follow the code of ethics of each
  • Keep abreast of current literature and research in the field.

What is a Behavior Support Plan?

The Behavior Support Plan is a plan of action that addresses the challenging behavioral support needs of an individual. Behavior Consultants will complete assessments, gather challenging-behavior data, and develop a plan to implement positive alternative skills for the challenging behaviors. Behavior Consultants adhere to the State of Indiana’s 460 Administrative Code guidelines. All behavior plans are reviewed by both a doctorate-level Behavior Consultant who has been state-designated as a Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP), and our Human Rights Committee. These reviews ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals we serve.
